"Hey Alpha?" Tobias asked as he, Dina, Cassie, Marco, and Harlan were led on a tour of the Megaship. So far, he'd shown them the Engine Room, the Cargo Bays, and their private quarters."Is there anyway we can contact our parents? We were on our way home and they'll worry if it gets too late."
"Certainly, Tobias. Right this way." Alpha led the five to the Bridge where they decided to take turns calling their parents. Marco went first while the others waited in the hall.
After DECA dialed up the number and the phone rang twice, it was yanked off the cradle by Marco's dad.
"Hello?"
"Hi Dad, it's me. Marco."
"Marco?! Where are you?"
"Uhhh...I'm at...the Surf Spot." Marco said hesitantly. "I was kicking Harlan's butt at Star Stryker II."
"Really?" Carlos Valerte replied. "Well, it's late. I'll come pick you two up--"
"Nono! We'll....walk home." Marco gave Alpha a nervous look.
"Are you sure? I don't think that's safe."
"Dad! I can take care of myself. Trust me. I'll be home in an...hour."
"An hour? Marco..."
"Please? I want to kick Harlan's rear a few more times." Marco crossed his fingers.
"Oh...alright....no stalling, though. I'll see you, then." Carlos sighed.
"Okay, thanks! Bye!" Marco motioned for Alpha to hang up, and Alpha walked over and pushed a button. Silence presumed.
"Thanks, Alpha." Marco sighed.
"No problem, Marco." Alpha said. "Dina's up next."
Marco walked out into the hallway. "Your turn, Dina."
Dina's conversation went almost in the way Marco's had. After a few minutes of slight wheedling and convincing, the new Yellow Ranger was spared an hour and thirty minutes to lounge around and then come home.
After they'd all made their calls and begged their parents to spare them some time, Alpha gave them their Megaship flightsuits and let them explore the Megaship on their own.
<Lunandria, it is time for you to wake up.>
"I changed my mind, DECA Go away." Luna opened her eyes and squinted slightly at the security camera.
<Lunandria, this is the time you requested.>
"Did you hear me? I changed my mind. Shut up and leave me the hell alone." Luna snapped crankily as she shoved her head under her pillow.
<I can always have Alpha come with something for your bad attitude.> DECA seemed a bit smug. Luna raised her head up.
"Ahh! Don't you dare! Last time you did that, I got drenched with a bucket of ice water! I'm up! I'm up." Luna jumped out of bed and put her jacket, belt, and Astro Morpher.
DECA said nothing more as Luna brushed out her hair and pulled it into a ponytail on the top of her head.
Stifling a yawn, the Red Ranger left her quarters and went to the Jump Bay to get something to eat. When she arrived, she found Dina, Tobias, Cassie, Marco, and Harlan. Get used to them, Luna. They're gonna be around for awhile. she told herself.
"Well, well. Hello, Sleeping Beauty." Marco said, noting her presence. Luna just rolled her eyes as she moved to the Synthetron and created herself a cup of strawberry-banana yogurt.
"Wow! How did you do that?" Cassie asked as Luna sat down at the table.
"Mmm? The Synthetron can make any type of food you want." Luna replied as she ate a spoonful of yogurt. "Didn't Alpha show you around the Megaship?"
"Yeah, but he didn't tell us about that and probably a lot of other stuff, too." Dina said. "Maybe you could show them to us."
"I....guess I could." Luna made a small smile, but nothing special. She was still getting used to having the others on board the Megaship. "Come with me. I'll show you what Alpha missed."
Tobias, Cassie, Dina, Harlan, and Marco followed Lunandria as she led them down the hall. "What didn't Alpha or DECA explain?" she asked.
"They didn't say anything about how to break the news to our parents that we're Rangers." Marco said.
"You're not supposed to." Luna replied. "That's part of the 'No one is to know of your alter ego' rule."
"It is? But what if we have to be gone for a few days? What do we do then? Lie?" Cassie asked. Luna shrugged.
"I don't know."
"Wait a sec." Harlan grabbed Luna's shoulder and turned her around to face himself and the others. "You mean to say that you're gonna lead us around and tell us what to do, but we have to figure out what to tell our parents?"
"I don't know." Luna said, sighing with frustration. "It's up to you whether you want to tell them or not. It's probably safer that they don't know though."
"Why?" Dina asked. Luna shut her eyes and rubbed her temples.
"It just is. That's why." The Red Ranger answered after a few seconds. Dina, Cassie, Harlan, Tobias, and Marco seemed to take this in and accept it as an answer.
"Where are your parents?" Harlan queried after they'd started walking down the hallway again. Luna came to a full and complete stop, and whirled around so she was face to face with Harlan.
In a low, cold voice, she rapped out. "That is none of your concern." She then turned around, took a deep breath, and walked down the hall.
"Luna, wait!" Cassie started off after her, but Red Ranger was already around the corner.
"That wasn't very nice, Harlan." Tobias said.
"Well, how was I to know she'd go thermal on me?" Harlan shot back.
"In any case, let's do some exploring. I only have an hour and a half to check stuff out before I have to get home." Dina interjected.
"Okay." they all said. They decided to head down the hall the way Luna'd gone. She was nowhere in sight.
They found the Megalift, picked a floor and rode it down. As they dissapeared behind the door, Luna watched from around the corner, then headed to the Bridge.
She was determined to find out why Dina seemed so familiar.
"DECA?" she asked. "I need to find some background history on Dina. Pull up her school records."
"Sex: female; hair: blonde." Luna mumbled to herself as her eyes flew over
the screen. Parents/guardians...Zhane and Karone Keithron?!"
That was it. That was the reason she was so familiar. Lunandria was Dina's
cousin.
"Good grief, I made my cousin into a Ranger and I didn't even know it." Luna
groaned. "Well she's not gonna know." she added. "It's probably for the
best."
Just then, she heard footsteps in the hallway. The Red Ranger dropped the
file from the screen, so it showed only blackness and stars. About three
seconds later, Tobias and Dina walked into the room.
"Luna, there you are. We were looking for you." Tobias said with a smile.
"You...were?" Luna asked hesitantly.
"Yeah. We're going to ask you if you wanted to go down to the Surf Spot with
us."
"I...don't think so. I have a lot of things to do." Luna said. It was partly
a lie, but who cared. She wasn't feeling up to going down to Earth
unmorphed. She hadn't done that in years. With good, reason, too.
"Oh. Okay, well, we'll see you tommorrow. My mom and dad are going to have a
fit if I don't get home soon." Dina said.
"Same here. Good night." Tobias smiled at her. Luna watched the two leave to
the Jump Bay. She felt slightly sick.
She had family and she didn't want them to know she existed. She left the
Bridge and went back to her quarters.
Sitting down on the bed, her mind tracked back on her discovery.
"It is better she doesn't know." Luna murmered. She reached over and pulled
a photograph out of her dresser. It was different from the one that sat on
the dresser already.
This one was of her cousin, her aunt and uncle, her mom and dad, and
herself. She was maybe five then. They'd never seemed defeatable to her.
Until that day...
She shivered some and shook off the thought. Depression was distracting to
her personal missions and what she'd just thought about was depressing.
"Forget it." she muttered bitterly to herself. "It doesn't matter anymore
anyhow."
At the Surf Spot, Cassie, Dina, Tobias, Harlan and Marco were having
milkshakes while quietly discussing the events of the day.
"I can't believe this happened to us." Dina said.
"Really. More awesome than getting chosen for the NASADA space academy."
Tobias agreed.
"Uh-oh." Cassie said. She was looking at the doorway.
"What...oh...thaaat." Harlan was focused on the four male figures in the
doorway. Cassie's dad, Harlan's dad, Dina's dad, and Marco's dad.
"We're in trouble." Dina said in a small voice.
The four quickly confessed their explanations, then were led home by their
fathers. Tobias walked home and ended up getting a small lecture for staying
out later than he'd said.
The next day, after Cassie'd ended up catching her toe-pick in the ice,
falling, and knocking the wind out of herself coming out of a Biellmann spin
during morning practice, the five new Rangers met up on the Astro Megaship.
Alpha was explaining the SimuDeck to them.
"You can create any sort of setting on the SimuDeck. You could make a
basketball court or use it for training purposes." he said.
"Galactic! Maybe Cassie could use it to practice while we're away from
Earth." Dina suggested.
"That's a fine parameter for the SimuDeck. There shouldn't be the slightest
of trouble." Alpha agreed.
"Can we give it a try?" Marco asked. Alpha nodded.
"Why not?" the little robot shrugged. "Just give DECA the command to create
the simulation. You can even create your own program, if you like. You can
ask Luna about that."
Meanwhile, Luna was working in the Engine Room checking the system
functions.
"DECA?" she asked. "Do a system scan and tell me if there are any problems
in the Hyper Rush converters? I thought I noticed something wrong earlier."
<The Hyper Rush converters have one small malfunction. I will correct it
now.>
"Okay. Thanks, DECA." Luna said, glancing up at the camera with the little
red light.
<Malfunction corrected.> DECA announced.
Lunandria used her scanner and checked out the rest of the system.
Everything was functioning perfectly and in the green.
With nothing more to do, the Red Ranger decided to straighten up her room a
bit. It wouldn't hurt to keep it mainly clean, anyhow.
"Hey, maybe Luna'd want to go play basketball with us." Cassie suggested as
she'd dribbled the basketball. It'd taken a few minutes for the five to
decide what kind of scenario to run on the SimuDeck.
"I'll go ask her." Dina said as she got up and left the SimuDeck. Walking
down the hall, she began her search for the Red Ranger. First stop, Luna's
room. Then, she'd check the Engine Room.
"Luna? Are you in here? It's me, Dina." Dina called as she stood outside the
door. There was no response.
Slowly, she looked down both directions of the hall then turned back to the
door. After a few tries, she got the code right and the door came open.
Looking around, she didn't see Luna anywhere. The sheet and comforter were
somewhat strewn about on the bed.
Apparently, she hadn't straightened them out after she'd gotten up from her
nap.
As she turned to leave, she spotted two picture frames sitting on the
dresser. Curious, Dina walked over and picked them up. One of them was of
her aunt Ashley and uncle Andros in their wedding attire. They'd been
missing and thought to be dead for years. The same with Dina's cousin,
Lunandria, whom she hadn't seen since she was ten. The other picture was of
her cousin Luna, her uncle, aunt, Dina's mom and dad, and herself.
Wait a sec.
Dina blinked as her mind flew over it. Luna? Her cousin? Luna was alive?
Luna was the Red Ranger...
"Dina? What are you doing in here?" the Yellow Ranger jumped and nearly
dropped the picture frame in surprise.
"Luna....where did you get these pictures?" she asked as she looked at the
one with herself and Luna in it.
"They're...I...what do you mean, 'what am I doing with these pictures?'"
Luna stepped forward.
"That's my uncle and aunt on their wedding day. This one's of my cousin and
I with our parents." Dina said. "Where did you get these?"
"They were my mother's." Luna stared at the floor while Dina digested this.
"Luna....are...are you...are we cousins? Are you the cousin that dissapeared
all that time ago?" Luna gave a slight glance upward, but remained silent.
"You knew I was your cousin, didn't you?" Dina blinked. "Why didn't you say
anything about it?"
"Because I didn't want you to know." Luna said after a few minutes. She
looked up into Dina's blue-grey eyes with her own hazelish green ones. "I
found out we were cousins earlier today. I also kind of figured people on
Earth must think I was dead after all this time."
"This is unbelievable." Dina moved to stand beside Luna. "After all this
time...I don't believe it! You know, I know someone who'd be really glad to
see you."
"Huh? Who?" Luna asked.
"My mom and dad! They were really upset when you and your parents became
missing."
"Dina...I don't know. It may be better for them to just go on thinking that
I'm gone."
"No! Lunandria Deilavek, listen to me! My mom was really sad and depressed
about Uncle Andros. I think you should go see her." Dina set her jaw
squarely. Luna sighed and stared at the floor.
"Aunt Karone and Uncle Zhane will feel the same even if I do go with you. My
parents are gone. They aren't coming back."
"But you're here. Please, Luna?" The Yellow Ranger took her
newly-found cousin's hand in hers and watched the Red Ranger's facial
expressions shift from uncaring to rather unreadable. After a few seconds,
Luna seemed at a loss for words. She couldn't turn Dina down, and yet, could
barely find it in her heart to go see the uncle and aunt she hadn't seen
since she was ten.
"I...I'll...go." she managed finally. Why did I just tell Dina I'd go
with her? Luna wondered. Is some part of me lonely for what family I
have left?
"Come on." Dina smiled and led Luna to the Jump Bay, where after they'd left
a message for the others saying they'd gone to do something on Earth, they
teleported away.
Karone Keithron sat at the kitchen table toying with a crossword puzzle.
She'd basically gotten the hang of them after a few months of first coming
to Earth and actually had completed four books of them. The one she was
currently working on was her fifth.
As she thought on her next word's clue, she heard the screen door open and
slam once or twice; tell-tale signs her daughter was home.
"Mom? I'm home! I brought a...friend." Dina's voice carried throughout the
house.
"Someone I've met perhaps?"
"Uhhhhhhh...well, yeah." Dina looked at Luna, who was looking around with a
slightly nervous look on her face. "My mom's in the kitchen. Come on."
Dina led her cousin into the kitchen. As Karone looked up from her
crossword, she saw her daughter and a another girl about Dina's age. This
girl had long dark brown and blonde hair. She was wearing a red shirt and
blue jeans. Karone felt her heart skip a few beats.
"Mom? This is Lunandria Deilavek. My friends and I call call her Luna." Dina
explained, watching her mother's reactions carefully. Karone stood up, never
taking her eyes off of Luna.
"Hi." Luna said shyly. Karone smiled softly and pushed her black framed
glasses back a bit. Luna looked so much like Karone's brother, Andros and
his daughter, Luna. The appearance was already very much like her presumed
deceased niece, but the same name? Too much coincidence.
"Luna...w...what is...who is your father, by chance." Karone stammered. Dina
looked from her mother to Luna.
"My father was Andros Deilavek. He was the first Red Ranger from KO-35..."
Luna replied softly, staring at the floor. Karone reached over and lifted
Luna's chin with her hand.
"Luna? My little niece Luna? Is that you?!" she wondered as she stared into
the hazelish-green eyes. Luna nodded slowly.
"Yes, Aunt Karone. It's me. I remember you." The two embraced in a hug. The
Red Ranger felt tears just begin to sting her eyes and pushed them back. It
was a very hard thing to do.
Dina smiled as she watched her mother and her cousin hold one another.
"Come on out into the living room with us, Luna. There's probably so much
for you to tell me." Karone said after a few seconds. The three went into
the living room where Dina and Luna took up the loveseat. She was sure this
was her lost niece. She and Zhane had agreed that their daughter not know
that much of their superhero/villain history. They'd figured it was probably
for the best. Now, it held as stronger proof this was no hoax.
"Where did you two meet?" Karone wondered as she sat down in a recliner.
"Uhhhh..." The Yellow and Red Rangers looked at one another. Should they
tell about their secret? Luna made a small nod at Dina as if to say "Yes. We
should tell. She'll understand."
"We met while Dina and her friends were walking home. I was--" Luna was cut
off as the storm door openned and slammed shut again.
"That'll be your uncle, Zhane. Zhane! Come here!" Karone called.
"Coming Karone. What is--" Zhane stopped dead as he saw who was sitting next
to Dina.
"Zhane...it's Luna." Karone got up and found a picture matching the one Luna
had in her room and handed it to Zhane, who looked from Luna to the picture
and back repeatedly. "She's alive."
"I see her..." Zhane whispered. "Lunandria, is it really you?"
Luna finally sighed. "I know I have an aunt named Karone and an uncle named
Zhane. Those are pretty uncommon names on Earth. My father's name was
Andros. My mother's name was Ashley. Dad was from KO-35, like my aunt and
uncle, and Mom came from this planet: Earth."
Zhane walked over and hugged the Red Ranger for a long time. After a few
seconds, he let her sit down.
"She was about to tell me how she and Dina met and how they figured out they
were cousins." Karone said.
"Well, how?" Zhane asked, sitting on another recliner next to Karone's.
"I was...well...first you need to know, there's an attack occuring. A
warlord named Vortrexis has attacked Earth and several other planets." Luna
started. "I was fighting off some of his foot soldiers and in need of some
help when Dina and her friends arrived."
"Wait...what about your mom and dad? What happened to them? After you all
dissapeared to Muiranthias, everyone thought you were dead." Karone
wondered. Luna took a deep breath and struggled to hold everything back that
was threatning to come pouring out.
"They...my...my mom...died...my dad...dissapeared. I don't know what
happened to him. But I do know Vortrexis was involved."
"Oh...oh, Luna...." Karone's eyes became moist. Her brother and her
sister-in-law were gone. She'd thought something horrible had happened when
they didn't return after five months. Now she knew the truth.
"I'm sorry, Aunt Karone." Luna whispered, staring at the floor.
"Luna, you were eleven when you all dissapeared. There was nothing you could
have done to stop it." Zhane said. Dina put her arm around her cousin's
shoulders.
"A...a..aafter my dad dissapeared, I became the Red Ranger." Luna continued
with how she and Dina had met. Zhane's eyes got huge.
"You....you what? Became the Red Ranger?!"
"Yes, Uncle Zhane. He asked me in a letter he left to take his place. So I
did." Luna nodded and rolled up the left sleeve of her blazer. There, was a
communicator. There wasn't any doubt about that.
"So you're morphed, fighting evil when Dina and her friends stop by to help
you. Right?" Karone asked. "Then what?"
"I went back to the Astro Megaship. Alpha and DECA convinced me to let them
be my teammates." Luna paused and waited for the hurricane. She was sure her
uncle and aunt wouldn't be to happy about Dina being a Ranger.
"DINA?! You made your cousin into a Power Ranger?!" It was Karone's turn to
have her eyes get big. Luna nodded.
"I...hope you're not too mad with me. I didn't have that much of a choice.
Vortrexis' attacks have been getting heavier and I needed the help. I didn't
know she was my cousin, then, either."
"Mad? No. Nono, Luna, sweetie. We're not mad." Zhane chuckled lowly after a
few seconds. "Of course not. Not at all."
"We're not mad at either of you. Just very surprised." Karone added softly.
Dina and Luna let out twin sighs of relief. Neither Karone nor Zhane could
help from laughing.
"So, Mom? Dad? Can I stay on the Megaship with Luna while we're flying
around and fighting on other planets?" Dina wondered hopefully.
"Mmmmmm....I don't know about that, dear." Karone looked at Zhane over the
rim of her reading glasses. She always wore them when doing crosswords and
had simply forgotten to take them off.
"I'll still go to school! Please?"
"Well..." Zhane raised an eyebrow. "I...Karone, what do you think?"
"I guess we could let her." Karone said slowly. "Speaking of school, Luna,
have you gone anytime since you dissapeared?"
"No. Alpha and DECA gave me tests and things, though. They were my teachers,
I guess."
"And who better than a robot and an onboard computer?" Zhane muttered. "How
about if you enroll in Angel Grove High with Dina? We can say you came out
of homeschooling. Besides, even if they recognize the name, I think you'll
be safe. The news and everyone can't lay a hand on you, let alone come
within 30 feet, camera, microphone or no unless you give them permission for
an interview."
"Well...uhhh....maybe. I don't know." Luna looked around at her newfound
family. "I...guess I could do it."
"Great! Cassie and I can take you to the mall later this week for clothes!
Maybe even tommorrow! Of course, some accessories will be of need, but
still..." Dina grinned. "This will be fun."
"Uh-oh. Our daughter is reminding me of how Ashley and Cassie were." the
former Silver Ranger laughed.
"Luna? Come along, and I'll show you the guest room. You can use it while
you're here." Karone swatted her husband and led the two girls off. She was
happier than she'd been in a very long time. Her niece was alive and well.
She was friends with Dina and was a Ranger fighting against evil. This made
her nervous as to whether her daughter and niece would survive their
battles, but she put that on the back burner for now.
Would Andros have been proud of his daughter, the Red Ranger?
Oh, yes. Karone thought to herself. Without a doubt.
Figure Skating FYI: The Biellmann spin is a spin in which the skater
(usually female, although I've seen a few male skaters do it, too) pulls one
foot over their head and holds it there while spinning. It was invented by
Denise Biellmann.
The End...For Now
