Still walking across Nebraska…

I meant to do this early on, and then I thought, nah, I’ll wait a while.

For those of you who are knew to this blog, you may not know that I am “walking across the US.” I’m doing it a little differently than you might think, though. I wear a pedometer daily to measure my steps. I enjoy doing this, because it gives me a visual record of how active I’ve been. I’m a big fan of simply being active for activity’s sake. Yes, an hour on the elliptical is great, but so is getting 12,000 steps over the course of a regular day. It isn’t the same, but it’s something extra.

Anyway, I have calculated the maximum width or length across each US state, and one by one, I am “walking” across them. I don’t know what I’ll do when I’ve completed all fifty states. I know it will take me a LONG time, because of frickin’ Alaska and Texas. Alaska is 2,261 miles wide! If I figure an average of six miles a day (some days are better, some are worse), then it will take me 376 days. I fully realize that this could take me years. It might take me the better part of a decade to do this.

However, it isn’t like I’m going to someday get to goal weight, and the sky will open up with sunshine and puppies and everything is great. I will struggle with healthy living my entire life. I’m okay with that; frankly, I’m looking forward to experiencing the challenge of maintenance, which I have heard MANY people say is even tougher than losing weight.

So whether I get done in five years or twenty, it doesn’t matter. I’m walking the US, and in 2030, if that’s when I finish, then I’ll decide then what I’m going to do.

But for now, I’m just taking it one state at a time. And per Erin‘s suggestion, my current state is her home state of Nebraska! Nebraska is 430 miles wide, and with my typical stride of 1900 steps per mile, it will take me 817,000 steps.

At present, I am 218,907 steps into Nebraska. I have 598,093 steps to go. That’s a long way. Which state should I do next?

I’m still walking across Nebraska. Join me?

  • Missouri! You should walk across Missouri. Also – I’ll be having a giveaway this month too…I will be hitting the 200 mile marker, but not yet.

Keep up the hard work. You help me keep up the hard work too.

  • Come to Mississippi!! Well, after you stop by Missour to see Seth! It’s kinda close and you’ll be in the area and all….hehe.

  • I love the idea ! I started trying to do that with my indoor bikes in the past, heading from coast to coast, beginning at New York City. I made it almost all the way through New York State and we had to get rid of the bike :-( . I should start something like that with my walking !

  • That is such a great idea :-)

  • Erin:

I need to tally up my miles and see how far I’ve gotten across my home state! But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not Saddle Rock! :-P Chimney Rock is much more popular, as are Jail and Courthouse Rocks. Nebraska is much more than corn, livestock, sediment, and Warren Buffet…even though I complain about all 4! We have Marg Helgenberger (yes, the hot lady from CSI), she was born in my town and raised in a neighboring town!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marg_Helgenberger Oh, and I’m not proud of this, nor have I ever visited, but I must mention that some idiots out by Alliance decided to pay homage to Stonehenge and created Carhenge… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carhenge

Oh, and don’t forget Lincoln – home of HUSKER football. And Omaha, which has so much to do it’s ridiculous! :-) ANYTHING BUT SEDIMENT! :-P :-D

    • Nebraska is a frickin’ long walk. I should have done Delaware next. :) And I will make sure to change the picture next post. Chimney Rock it is. I’ve never been to Nebraska; I had no idea! :)

As far as Carhenge, that is at least better than Kentucky Stonehenge, which is basically some guy in my tiny hometown of Munfordville, population 1,700, put some upright rocks in his front yard in a circle and claims its a tourist attraction. That’s embarrassing.

  • Jess:

When I first saw the title, I thought you were actually walking across Nebraska. Then I laughed because it’s a great idea! I might try it, but screw America. I’m walking across the world! I can imagine it already: TREKKING THROUGH NEPAL.

Anyway, keep it up! I wear a pedometer too. It helps me know for SURE how productive I’ve been. I do the minimum 10,000 (usually). What’s your daily goal?

And maintaining sucks. I’ve failed 3 times, and I’ll be damned if I fail again.

Keep trekking across states! You should do something like Netherlands. It’s small :) And foreign.

    • I like the idea of walking around the world. :) Be sure to send me a postcard from Nepal. :)

My daily goal is 12,000, but I’ll be honest – I frequently don’t get it. I hope to hit at least 10,000.

I’ve heard maintaining sucks. I just want to get there so I can find out for myself. :)

  • Hey Jeremy,

Pretty cool concept about you “walking” across the country. As you can tell from my website I’m a huge nerd, and I actually stumbled across a site where you can do the same thing as walking across the US, but instead you walk the path of Frodo from the Shire to Mordor. Somebody took the time to map out the distances for each location and stuff…Pretty wild.

Of course, I’ve already managed to lose the bookmark, but I’ll see if I can find again. Best of luck in your walk, just keep moving..one step is one step closer to your goal.

  • How about coming up to Canada next? lol!!! (oh right, we’re not part of the US) ;) You’ve actually got a fabulous idea going there, it must make it more fun and motivating!

    • I really should do Canada soon. Even though I’m walking the US, I will definitely announce when I’ve walked far enough to cover Canada. :)

And hey, I loved Canada. I went on a road trip a few years ago up north, and people got progressively ruder and ruder the farther north we went, and then suddenly, we crossed into Canada, and everyone was friendly again. Seriously. :)

  • Sunshine and puppies, that is good. Sounds like a great idea. I walk 4 miles most days. The weather is getting nice here in illinois. Beautiful day today.
