Super Mario and Princess Peach

I ended up getting sick Saturday night. Sunday was okay. Monday was a little worse. Today is awful. God willing, I will feel better tomorrow.

This weigh-in is going to suck. I have not been in the gym since Sunday, and my diet has not really been that great, either. But I’ll just own it and accept whatever the scale gives me Friday morning.

I have no great diet insights to share, so I have decided that I want to do a different post. I’m going to talk a little about the wedding!

As those of you who have been here for a while know, I am getting married to my better half, Tina, this October. Our wedding is going to be a bit nontraditional in some ways and very traditional in others.

We’re getting married by one of my best friends. However, he is not one of those Internet Church of Mammals preachers. He just happens to be a pastor, and since we haven’t found a church here to join yet, we’re going to have him marry us. It’s going to be a pretty standard Protestant service.

In a cave. We’re getting married in Lost River Cave. It’s a local cave with a pretty interesting history. The spot where we are getting married is an old nightclub from the Prohibition Era. It’s beautiful; of course, I’ll post pictures of the wedding as soon as we’re back from the honeymoon.

My best man is a woman. This one isn’t weird to me but apparently it’s different to a lot of people. Fortunately, Tina has no issues with it. My best friend (other than Tina, of course) just happens to be a woman, so who else would I pick to be my best man?

Tina and I are both dorks. I’m a bigger dork than she is, but we’re both pretty dorky. Tina is also a baker. She had planned to do our wedding cake, but pretty much every married woman we know advised her against this, solely for stress reasons. That’s why she decided that instead, she would make the groom’s cake.

I’m a little different, in that I am a fat kid who DOES NOT LIKE CAKE. Frankly, it bores me. Oh, spongy bread… can I just have the icing? Which is why my groom’s cake is going to ROCK, because it’s going to not be a cake!

Tina is making a three-tiered “cake.” The bottom layer is going to be a brownie, the middle layer will be cookies, and the top layer will be Golden Grahams S’mores treats (picture Rice Krispie Treats, but with Golden Grahams and chocolate chips instead of Rice Krispies.) And the entire thing will be covered with icing.

But best yet… she’s doing it Super Mario themed!

It’s a bit of an inside joke. At our engagement party last Halloween, which was also a costume party, we dressed up as Super Mario and Princess Peach.

And we decided that a Super Mario themed wedding cake would be a bit much, but it would be perfect for a groom’s cake! And we found some Super Mario and Princess Peach toys that are going to serve as cake toppers.

Yes, I will be cheating on my diet the day of my wedding.

  • I love it when people admit to being dorky. I do it everyday. And love it when people don’t take life so seriously!! Awesome ideas and looking forward to seeing pics of the big shindig!

  • That is pretty cool. I bought the Super Mario Wii game around Christmas time and played it until I beat it. It took me way back!

Congrats on the upcoming wedding! I’m pretty stoked to see the pictures of that cake.

I hope you get better soon so that you can get back to it. Keep the posts coming.

  • I think it is wonderful ! A wedding is supposed to be about the joining of two lives, and lives are very individual. My husband is a Roman Catholic Deacon as well as a Minister of the Universal Life Church ( second one for reasons of greater freedom) and last summer he preformed a wedding in a park where the Best Man was an Irish Setter and the Maid of Honor was a man. It was beautiful and meaningful.

Years ago I was to a Lost River Cave, and I think it was in a southern state. It also had an old boot leg history. If it is the same place, it is an absolutely beautiful location .

Hope you feel better soon !

Hi there… I stumbled across your blog… would you mind my asking where you found those figures? I’ve been looking for some just like them! Thanks!

    • Not at all. We actually just bought them from an ebay seller from China. He went by the handle hiewnuqk268. They weren’t terribly expensive, but we did have to buy them separately. Good luck!

  • @Craig – I figure I may as well embrace being a dork – it’s who I am. :)

@Seth – I’m hoping today is my last day sick. I want to get back into the gym. And I can’t wait to get the video game. I’ve played it a few times and it definitely feels old school.

@Diane – Lost River Cave is right here in Kentucky, and a LOT of tourists definitely come through it. If you went on a boat ride in the cave, then this was probably it, as it’s the only one in Kentucky. :)

@Andrew – We certainly balance each other out. I’m crazy where she’s sane and she’s crazy where I’m sane. It’s a good fix. :)

@Erin – There will definitely be a lot of pictures posted. We have two photographs for six hours, and they’re doing the wedding in photojournalism style. That means not too many forced group shots, just action shots of the ceremony and reception. :)

I haven’t been following your blog very long but in the time I have, I’m loving it.

Sounds like you’re going to have an awesome wedding! My anniversary is in October, too. We did the little wedding chapel thing (no, not in Vegas! lol!) but I know that my husband and I would’ve loved the cave option! How cool!

I was sick with a sinus infection/stomach flu all last week. It’s really crappy feeling that way. I hope that you are feeling better soon.

  • I love your non-traditional ideas.your wedding will be so much more special and memorable! And your non cake sounds fantastic. Want to mail me a piece?!!

Don’t call it cheating…it makes it sound bad. You’re going to enjoy your day and that day includes cake. No big deal. It’s when the days following come and your still including cake that it becomes a big deal.

    • You do make a good point. We’ve already decided, we’re enjoying the wedding reception and the honeymoon, and then we’ll be back on program as soon as we’re back. After all, cake can fit into a healthy lifestyle, just not every day. Occasional treat. :)
